Nobel Winner Claims Future Food Crisis is No “False Alarm”
Posted on March 23, 2009
Paul Krugman, a New York Times columnist and winner of the Nobel Prize for economics, recently warned that the world should not allow the financial crisis to overshadow a lingering food crisis.
Krugman noted that a number of resource constraints – such as access to water, oil, and arable land – are converging with growing demand, both from a swelling global population as well as shifting demands for more resource intensive foods (such as meats).
Krugman highlighted the need for more investment into physical infrastructure and agricultural R&D while stressing the need to adjust agricultural policy to benefit developing countries more.
